Call it Arson & TPoBPaH at the Space 11.19.14

We're going to jump right into another set of concert photos to get these all posted before the year is up! These photos are from the Space in Hamden, same as the last batch I posted, but with one huge difference: the lights were turned on! The Space is essentially a basement with black walls and the light is hardly ever turned up. I was also able to set up a quick custom white balance before the bands came out. The bass drum had a white face, so I metered off of that and was able to correct for the yellow tones of the stage lights. These might be the cleanest photos I've taken color wise all year.

Call it Arson is a local Connecticut band with a large following. I got pushed around by the audience a good amount and needless to say, I had no room to move during their set. I kept the same spot, so there isn't much variation in the way of angles. The Pains of Being Pure at Heart had a much more mellow set, but I enjoyed it far more. The audience definitely thinned out, so I was able to move around as much as I wanted.

You might be wondering if I gave up on my favorite shot of the night. Silly readers, that's not the case at all. I still take shoe shots at most concerts, but I haven't posted them in a long time. I'm thinking of doing a side photo project with them, which is why I've been keeping them to myself. However, I really enjoyed these two and thought I'd share.

TTNG at the Space 11.05.14

One of my favorite bands that I stumbled upon as a result of shooting for Surviving the Golden Age is the British math rock trio TTNG, formerly known as This Town Needs Guns. I photographed them as the opening act for Terra Melos in 2013, so I was really excited to see them as a headliner this time around at The Space in Hamden. While I'm not particularly fond of the dim lighting here, I pulled out a few tricks to get a few decent shots and one that is among my favorites that I took all year.

The band joked with the audience throughout the night and very engaging, in addition to being remarkably talented musicians. I tried some wide angle shots at the front of the stage, but my 20mm lens is not sharp in low light situations. I quickly moved to the side of the stage to be able to use my faster, zoom lenses. Lead singer Henry Tremain turns to the rest of the band, so there's no point in trying to shoot from his side of the stage. I was also lucky enough to have an excited fan at the front of the stage shooting video on his cell phone. The white assist light kicked up just enough light to get some lovely shots of guitarist Tim Collis, who spent the majority of the concert in the shadows.

fr EYE day

a most glorious fr EYE day to you!

this is a shot eye've been wanting to take since this whole photo series started: a horizontal iris! thanks to the goat at Silverman's Farm that stood still long enough for me to take this. eye couldn't get as close as eye would have liked, but eye think it still works.
